Micawber Tavern – Belgrave

Micawber Tavern - the most welcome of stop-offs either on your way into or back home from the Dandenong Ranges.

It’s almost a quintessentially British scene. A charming country tavern, nestled in the rolling hills, serving a fine selection of beers on tap and home-cooked hearty classics from a reassuringly busy kitchen. While you take in the beautiful nature surrounding the beer garden, you can hear the gentle flow of the stream that runs alongside. Ahhhhhh, heaven. A heaven that exists in the Dandenong Ranges - less than an hour from Melbourne.

Micawber Tavern is a well-established (over 100 years old) countryside haven located on the Monbulk Road in Belgrave. Well known for its tap beers and forest setting, a visit to Micawber Tavern never disappoints.

Beers aplenty at the Micawber Tavern bar. They also do a fine line in mocktails, amongst other drinks options.

The beauty of Micawber Tavern is that you can just pop in for a quick drink or stay for a three-course-meal. The bar area includes high tables for those seeking an informal pub setting while the roomy dining area is perfect for those looking to enjoy a good quality sit-down meal. Whichever approach you choose, you cannot fail to appreciate that British country pub feel - accentuated by the decor of the classic style (think hanging tankards, etc).

The dining room at Micawber Tavern is roomy, light and within a hop, skip and a jump of the bar and beer garden.

What really brings this BRITlist editor back to the Micawber is the outside setting. The most picturesque, pleasant and peaceful of beer gardens includes tables and seating alongside the Clematis Creek as well as a sheltered, canopy area for those seeking shade from the sun and/or elements. Do be warned, once you settle in here you will never want to leave!

Where else would you want to while away those lazy summer days?

In terms of the food on offer here, think of your classic pub menu but with some higher-end additons to provide something for every taste. Naturally they do a range of chicken parmas and schnitzels, steaks and burgers too. But for the more refined palate, there’s main course options such as pan fried salmon, mushroom fettuccine or cauliflower pakora. And to top it all off, yes, they do a mean Sunday roast that includes a generously-sized Yorkshire pudding.
