Beautifully appointed in the picturesque town of Kyneton, Piper Street Food Co. significantly raises the bar when it comes to pies, pasties and quiches.
For this BRITlist editor to drive over one and a half hours just to sample a pie says a lot about the pie. Or should we say it says a lot about the producers of the pie.
In these early days of BRITlist Melbourne, we have come across the name of ‘Piper Street Food Co.’ on more than one occasion. Initially it was off the back of their reputation as producers of high quality pork pies. However, their daily-produced hot pies and pasties is what really caught our eye on their Instagram page. Suffice to say they looked mouthwatering.

Piper Street Food Co. is based in the Macedon Ranges town of Kyneton. It can take anything between an hour to an hour and a half to drive there from Melbourne, but Kyneton as whole has plenty on offer to make a great day trip. For BRITlist however, our Kyneton mission was focused purely upon the pies and pastries on offer at Piper Street.
These are seriously worth every cent when it comes to quality. Warning - normal pastries will no longer be acceptable once you’ve had an item off of the Piper Street Food Co. menu,
A beautiful and quaint shopfront leads through to a compact shop and counter area. Many Piper Street Food Co. items (think high quality picnic products) are on display as well as the hot cabinets that contain that day’s freshly-made pies and pasties. Behind the counter you can see through to the large kitchen where their products are made and cooking classes conducted.
Just look at these little Cornish beauties waiting to be snaffled up.
With a braised beef pie purchased and an appetite ready to be satisfied, one bite into it confirms that the long drive has been worth it. This is quite simply the best pie I have tasted in 12 years of living in Australia.
The meat comes in mouthwatering chunks, washed in a thick gravy that leaves you wanting more. However the real stand-out here is the pastry. The pastry is out of this world memorable. No surprises they offer pastry-making classes here because they are clearly the masters!
